How much you need to retire comfortably — and the monthly investment to get there.
An educational estimate. It assumes steady returns and inflation, that you draw down the corpus over retirement, and ignores taxes, EPF/NPS/pension income, and one-off goals. Treat it as a direction, not a guarantee.

In short
It answers two questions. First, how large a corpus you would need on the day you retire so that it can pay your inflated expenses for the rest of your life. Second, what monthly SIP would close the gap between that number and what your current savings will have grown to by then.
Because growth and inflation compound, they do not add. Subtracting is a rough shortcut that drifts further from the truth the longer the horizon; the ratio form stays correct over decades, which is exactly the timescale here.
Two compounding effects stack. Your expenses inflate for every year until you retire, and then that inflated figure has to be paid for every year afterwards. A long retirement multiplies an already-inflated number.
The model assumes the corpus is exhausted exactly then, so outliving it is the risk it does not cover. Entering a higher life expectancy is the honest way to see that cost.
No. They are widely used planning placeholders, deliberately editable. Nobody knows future inflation or returns, which is why the useful exercise is changing them and watching how much the answer moves.
The Reserve Bank sets and publishes the inflation target that anchors any long-horizon planning assumption. Use it as a sanity check on the inflation figure you enter, not as a forecast of your own spending.
Publishes the actual measured inflation series each month. Your personal basket — rent, school fees, healthcare — can inflate quite differently from the headline index.
The corpus is a present-value-of-an-annuity calculation discounted at the real rate; the SIP inverts the future-value-of-an-annuity formula to solve for the instalment. Both are textbook, not proprietary.
